PsycHealth Zambia conducted a workshop for the National Junior Golfer’s Team in Lusaka to equip them with personalised coping mechanisms to deal with the stress, performance anxiety and fatigue of participating in competitive sports. The team discussed the importance of developing mental muscle and explored coping mechanisms that the young athletes could use to combat anxiety during training and tournaments/Competitions.
Many athletes are prone to adopting a singular identity and derive their sense of self-worth from their performances. If they don’t perform well, they may experience a low sense of self-worth/ Low self-esteem. The team was successfully able to educate the junior golfers on the importance of maintaining a positive sense of self and the importance of seeking help when faced with any mental challenges in their sports performance and in their personal lives.
